During the winter season 2024-2025 , several hundred households in the Gothenburg region participated in the local flexibility market, Effekthandel Väst, through RESONANCE partners Mölndal Energi and CheckWatt.
Effekthandel Väst, driven by the energy companies and grid operators Mölndal Energi and Göteborg Energi, enables business customers and aggregators to act as flexibility suppliers. This means they can help stabilise the local electricity grid by adjusting their energy consumption or production in response to grid needs.
With CheckWatt as the aggregator, the Swedish RESONANCE pilot contributed 0.7 MW of battery resources (out of a total of 7.6 MW) to the local flexibility market from November to March. The battery resources also provided FCR-D ancillary services to the Swedish system operator, Svenska kraftnät, thereby demonstrating the multi-market potential of the automatic flexibility management solutions developed in the project.
On average, individual customer revenues increased from 1,100 SEK to 1,800 SEK during the winter months. However, since this winter was unusually mild, leading to less frequent activation of flexibility than expected, revenue growth would likely have been even higher during a normal winter.
The diagram shows an example of a battery that delivers local flexibility and the ancillary service FCR-D during a winter day. The blue line represents the state-of-charge, and the orange line is the battery power. The battery is charged between 5 and 7 a.m. and activated for local flexibility from 9 to 10 a.m.
